17-05-17 Report:
Unusual Bright Red Object Seen High Over Farnborough Airfield -
Travelled At Least 1 Mile Towards Heathrow, London, UK
I never miss an opportunity to skywatch, and even study the sky for a while before retiring to bed - and this morning (17/05/2017) at 1:30am I looked out of our bedroom window and suddenly spotted a bright red light appear high in the sky above the airfield in Farnborough, (incidentally, the airport here is normally closed at 10:30pm).
Initially, at a distance, (of about a mile away) I thought that this thing may have merely been a large Chinese lantern, but then soon realized the object was flying INTO the wind (weather conditions were damp and windy).
Instead of fizzling out as a lantern would normally do, this light stayed very bright, travelling right across the sky, on a straight line heading towards Heathrow, in a controlled, steady manner and at a speed of about 20-30 mph.
It was difficult to determine its shape, (hence my description of a "light") and there was absolutely no strobing on this unidentified, which must have flown roughly 1 mile before it went beyond the range of my view.
Unfortunately, I didn't have binoculars or my camera to hand at this particular time, but thought that what I witnessed was worth reporting.
