I have observed a military helicopter pair, very frantically & acutely circling north east of A3/A325 roundabout near Liss, Hampshire on March 22nd '10 (admittedly close to MOD land, with observed aerial mast at center of activity) and a Chinook "very, very acutely circling/dipping" for some time east of and close to my home yesterday morning; see Google map below the area was to the right hand side of photo, weather was very misty with low cloud/rain at time; have heard the same activity at night and day time for some time last year, when you see observers in US commenting on such activity apparently chasing/observing something, away from regular training areas, it does seem a bit strange.

Also, I saw the Chinook from my lounge window to the east; I have never seen this type of copter' performing such manoeuvres especially on a rainy, misty day; it made no sense considering the risk in such an area.

I saw the Chinook disappearing in and out of cloud whilst observing it, at I would estimate about 500 feet by dipping the front end acutely; it looked like a desperate attempt to keep sight or track of something.  I also observed line of sight through side windows i.e. could temporarily see through all side row of windows to light on other side due to angle of circling.

It was the continued noise of the copter' which drew me to finally observe it. The same type of copter has been heard to fly over head again at low altitude many times last year but more to the immediate south of Poplar Way estate.

An interesting note is that immediately above the area is a favourite for gliders to gain height which you can check out with gliding clubs, the thermals rise causing not just gliders but other gliding birds of prey to gain height (several thousand feet) before moving on. I have pics of these including gliders and birds in the air at same time.

Oddly, the terrain here is nowhere near the height of the downs about 3 miles to south at Cocking so not sure where the thermals originate.

All I can do is repeat the Google pic of where it took place below, which is just to the east of where I live indicated by post code marker.
