Another witness contacted BEAMS and wrote....
I read the report regarding the sighting of lights in Canning Town in late Spring of 1974 by an anonymous poster and I had to do a double take!
I too, along with a school friend (aged 13), had a strange encounter in the late Spring of that year (I have the actual date marked in my 1974 diary which is currently unreachable as it is in the attic with the entrance blocked with my teenage son's furniture).
It was different to the sighting described. I don't recall the actual time (possibly dusk) but it was well after school as we were messing around in my garden on Pepper Road in Calverton. We witnessed two seemingly high parallel white lights in the sky above us coming from George's Hill way (there is a hillfort up there out of interest). The lights moved slowly overhead - always equidistant - and then started 'dancing'. They moved in a zig-zag pattern at extraordinary speeds, jumping around. This happened for around one minute. They then just disappeared, only to reappear again to the right of where we were standing to repeat the whole 'dance' again. We just watched; our mouths wide open. Finally, the lights slowed down somewhat and made their way towards Oxton way.
I have no idea whether this, and the Camden Town sighting, are of the same phenomenon, but the timing is uncanny.
Then, in 2018, I was encouraged to buy an autobiography which had been written by an ex Calverton resident who had become rather a famous goalkeeper back in the day for Derby County. The book is called 'Cherry Picking' by ***********, who had lived in Calverton when I did. I know exactly which road he lived on (Seely Avenue).
Whilst reading the book, I was taken aback by something he wrote on page 9. The passage that caught my eye reads as follows:
"....it was when I was on one of those rounds [paper round] I saw something most people laugh about when I tell them, so I don't tell many; it was about four o' clock one summer afternoon when I had a close encounter with a bright red light in the sky at the end of Seely Avenue. It rose upwards in a brilliant triangular shape the size of three houses, buzzing as it did so, about two hundred yards away from me. I froze, but couldn't stop watching this object climbing higher and faster, as it eventually disappeared beyond Oxton Woods in the near distance. I peddled home as fast as I could to tell my mum. I was relieved to find out that my sister Lynne had seen it too, and more; she said that she saw not just one but three of them in a triangular formation. It was reported in the local press".
The year?.....was 1974!!
So, we have two parallel lights, one triangular shape, three triangles and a large round object all in the same year, around the same time of year, in both North Nottinghamshire and Camden Town. How's that for coincidences??!!
